A New Messenger

Duke walked into his bedchamber with leaden steps, his fingers dripping the evidence of his guilt onto the carpet. He sat on the edge of his bed, mouth hanging open, still processing the events of the last few minutes.

He had returned to his estate and ventured towards the medical wing. He’d walked past the guards without a word. Ignoring all their looks. Bypassing their questions. He’d moved casually yet with a sense of purpose. If he had slowed, or stopped, he wouldn’t have been able to bring himself to start again.

Moving into the wing, he’d dismissed the dishevelled doctor. Once alone with his snarling, rabid soldiers, Duke had gazed over them, one by one. They were covered in wounds and sores, lesions and blood, having tried any means to free themselves. Like cutting and biting their own flesh.

He had looked into each of their eyes, eyes that still looked human, and to Duke, like they were silently screaming for peace, for mercy. Closing his own briefly, he had made sure to open them as he raised his hand. He would do them the courtesy of looking them in the eye as he gave them peace.

Within a half-minute it was done. They had moved no more. The greatest telling wound had been the one their Alpha had given them, slicing their throats. It had ended their lives. He had killed before, and it never made him feel good.

He had done the right thing. The only thing he could do to show his men how much he loved them. Duke told himself that as he brought his blood saturated hands to his face as it contorted into a tortured grimace with his eyes squeezed shut as he sobbed. No matter what he told himself, no matter how true it might be, the act that gave his men their freedom had broken his heart.

He heard someone enter the room, and while according to wolf custom emotion such as this was unseemly, Duke didn’t care. He didn’t acknowledge them. He couldn’t handle questions.

How could he make anyone else understand when he himself didn’t? He felt drained of everything until he felt one of his hands being taken away from his face. Even in his state, it was odd to be touched with such gentleness.

That finally made him open his eyes, his breathing heavy, to see Josette kneeling in front of him. She washed his hand with a cloth, then rinsed it in a basin of hot water. Silent as she worked, efficiently washing away the evidence of what he had done.

When she reached for
